Shylo M. Martinez holds a Master of Fine Arts in Dance Choreography from Wilson College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from New York University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Dance and Theatre and Musical Theatre Dance Coordinator at Shenandoah Conservatory, Shenandoah University. Previously, she served as a faculty member at Frostburg State University, where she worked as a Director, Choreographer, and Dance Professor for Musical Theatre Dance Studies. She was also an Artist-in-Residence at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.
Her performance career includes a featured dancer role in the motion picture Winter’s Tale, working with Wayne Cilento. She toured with the Broadway production of Wicked as the Witch’s Mother and a female swing, covering nine roles. She also had the honor of working with Twyla Tharp in the Broadway production of Movin’ Out, serving as a female swing and understudy for the lead role of Judy during the show’s world tour.
Shylo began her professional career at age 16, performing as Victoria in Cats in Hamburg, Germany, later joining the national tour in the United States and Canada. She continued performing the role at various regional theaters after becoming a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association (AEA). Her musical theatre credits include West Side Story at Walnut Street Theatre and The Fulton Opera House during the show’s 50th-anniversary run. She also had the thrill of performing in The Radio City Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.
Beyond musical theatre, Shylo has performed with several contemporary ballet companies, including Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance (NYC), Echo Park Contemporary Ballet (Washington, DC), and Baltimore Ballet (Maryland). She continues to share her passion for dance through workshops, conventions, and choreography at regional theaters. In 2021, she was awarded BroadwayWorld Central Virginia’s Best Choreography of a Play or Musical for her work on Grease at Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre.
